Almost at the age of 21, Steve Lacy has already proven he can make bangers out of anything. He produced his hit single Dark Red off an iPhone, as well as the rest of his 2017 project Steve Lacy’s Demo. The track currently has over 30 million streams on Spotify.

Since then he’s collaborated on tracks with Tyler, the Creator, Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, and Kali Uchis; and his band The Internet released their fourth album Hive Mind in 2018. He’s also got writing credits on Solange’s When I Get Home and Mac Miller’s Swimming (RIP).

In an interview with i-D earlier this week, he said the album has been a work in progress for two years.

“My little sister moved to college and I had her room to just do whatever with, so I put a studio up in there, and I just, you know, made music. I had a break from touring for like a month and a half, and I was literally just recording.

…I’m not as limited to resources anymore. I’ve made a little money, so I have a laptop now and some instruments. I think the process is still the same, I’ve just got some better gear that’s all.”

On the theme of the album, Steve said: “It’s basically my journey, my sexuality. But in a very fun and witty way, it’s not really that serious, it’s not super sad. I think it’s my journey, it’s an expression of how I feel right now.”

The album is set to release on May 24.

May is gonna be a good month for music, with Tyler, the Creator releasing his next album ‘Igor’ on the 17th.
